Trimming Robot Sets New Benchmark for Salmon Processing

  (ICELAND, 1/18/2013)

Marel’s ITM2 Trimming Robot is the ideal solution for high-value salmon trimming. It can work more quickly, reliably and consistently than a master trimmer working at peak performance – but can do so continuously, all day long.

Featuring highly advanced vision technology, the ITM2 calculates the most profitable cut configuration based on weight, shape, and/or color grade parameters, before trimming loins, belly sides and fillet surfaces at high speed. “The machine is reliable, efficient, and fast . . . and cuts nice fillets every time,” says Per Kristian Bjånesöy, Production and Technical Manager Austevoll Laksepakkeri AS, Norway.

Superior trimming performance
For salmon processors, the bottom line is that the ITM2’s high trimming performance improves yield – both for high-value trims and overall – by delivering uniform trimming tailored to your specifications, with high reliability and throughput, and consistently high quality.

Fully integrated
The ITM2 is designed for seamless integration into pre- or post rigor fillet processing lines. An integrated fillet processing line becomes even more powerful when Marel Innova yield monitoring software is implemented.

By integrating predefined weighing points along the processing line, Innova enables processors to monitor the raw material utilization at each processing step, thereby taking the management of yields and enhancement of production value to new levels. Furthermore, with an instantaneous overview of productivity and system uptime, the processor can react quickly and keep the line running at maximum efficiency, while also improving traceability.

“If I see that the weight percentage trend for any trim category is increasing, then we just make corrections to reduce trim and increase yield,” says Stian Otterlei, Manager Filleting Department Austevoll Seafood.

The latest and best in salmon processing technology will be firmly in focus at the 12th annual Marel Salmon ShowHow

After Austevoll Seafood installed the ITM2 trimming robotline, labor requirements dropped significantly and capacity improved dramatically. “We’re packing more with fewer people. And because of increased output, and because now we also have more by-products to pack, we haven’t had to lay anyone off,” says Per Kristian. “We’re very pleased.”
