The new items are part of Nissui’s Spring/Summer 2026 product concept

Nissui launches microwave-ready grilled and fried fish dishes for busy households

  (JAPAN, 1/19/2026)

New additions to the “Today’s Side Dish” frozen food series aim to meet growing demand for convenient, authentic seafood meals in Japan

Nissui Corporation (Representative Director, President and CEO: Akira Tanaka), headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, announced it will release three new frozen food products in its popular “Today’s Side Dish” series on March 1. The new lineup includes “Today’s Side Dish: Microwaveable Grilled Salt Mackerel,” “Grilled Sawara with Kyoto-Style Saikyo Flavor,” and “Fried Horse Mackerel with Plum and Shiso Leaf.” Designed for home use, all three products can be prepared simply by heating them in the microwave.

The new items are part of Nissui’s Spring/Summer 2026 product concept, titled “Working closely with customers to bring joy through new food.” The company says the products were developed to enrich everyday meals and deliver what it calls “soul-satisfying pleasure” at the dinner table, even on busy weekdays.

Responding to lifestyle changes and demand for fish dishes

In recent years, Japan has seen a steady increase in dual-income households and single-person households, driving strong demand for ready-to-eat and easy-to-prepare meals. According to industry trends, fish-based prepared foods are especially sought after for their nutritional value, including high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, but are often avoided at home due to the time required for preparationcooking odors, and food waste.

Nissui aims to address these issues by offering authentic-tasting fish dishes that require no grilling, frying, or cleanup, making them accessible even to consumers who rarely cook seafood at home.

Product highlights and proprietary technology

The “Grilled Salt Mackerel” is seasoned with shio koji and seaweed salt from Awaji Island, then grilled to achieve a fragrant finish. The “Grilled Sawara Saikyo Style” is marinated overnight in a blend of white miso, sugar, mirin, sake, shio koji, and soy sauce, creating a rich flavor that emphasizes sweetness and umami, characteristic of Kyoto-style Saikyo cuisine.

Both grilled items use Nissui’s proprietary “Fluffy Marinating Technique,” which helps maintain a soft, moist texture even after microwave heating—a common challenge for frozen fish products.

The “Fried Horse Mackerel with Plum and Shiso” features horse mackerel coated in a unique batter and homemade-style breadcrumbs, then topped with a sauce made from plum (ume) and shiso leaves, delivering a light, crispy texture with a refreshing, tangy finish.

Expanding the “Today’s Side Dish” lineup

Nissui has previously introduced microwaveable fish dishes under the “Today’s Side Dish” brand. With the addition of these three new products, the company further expands its frozen seafood lineup, offering greater variety and flexibility for home meals.

By combining traditional Japanese flavorsmodern freezing technology, and microwave convenienceNissui hopes to continue supporting changing lifestyles while encouraging consumers to enjoy fish more frequently as part of their daily diet.
