Norwegian-backed project in Lüderitz secures 51,000-tonne license, aiming to create a new industry on the continent.
LÜDERITZ — A landmark collaboration between the African Aquaculture Company and Norway's AKVA group is set to establish Africa's first commercial sea-based salmon farm. Located just outside Lüderitz, the project leverages a site with stable currents and ideal year-round temperatures of 10–16 degrees Celsius, conditions rarely found in the Southern Hemisphere.

The venture, which has secured a production license for 51,000 tonnes of salmon, is poised to become one of the largest aquaculture initiatives in the region. African Aquaculture Company CEO Helge Krøgenes highlighted the importance of their partner, stating, “For us, it has been crucial to align with a solid partner who can contribute with experience, technology, and understanding of international deliveries. AKVA group shares our vision of building a robust industry in Namibia."
The project, which has been in development for over two years, will initially use five floating pens equipped with advanced feeding, camera, and digital solutions. The plan is to introduce the first smolt in 2026, with the inaugural harvest scheduled for 2027. The facility will rely on the well-established harbor and processing infrastructure in Lüderitz Bay, providing a strong foundation for the operation.

Namibia is an attractive location due to its political stability and clear regulatory frameworks. The project has received strong support from Namibian authorities for its high standards and is expected to generate jobs, expertise, and export revenues. The initiative represents a significant step not only in salmon production but also in responsibly introducing a new, high-tech industry to the continent with a strong focus on local value creation.
