Bumble Bee pledges to grant USD 1 million to WWF

  (UNITED STATES, 4/26/2013)

Bumble Bee Foods has announced the introduction of Wild Selections® – a new high-quality branded line of seafood products bearing the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) ecolabel. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these products will help support efforts by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to protect marine life and promote sustainable fishing methods worldwide, while spreading awareness of the MSC-certified seafood scheme.

Bumble Bee President and CEO Chris Lischewski said that the company is committing USD 0.13 per can, for a minimum of USD 1 million, from the sale of Wild Selections® products over the next five years. The new product line is being featured at the European Seafood Exposition (ESE) in Brussels, and the first products to be launched in 2013 will include MSC-certified albacore and lightmeat tuna, with MSC-certified salmon, shrimp, clams and sardines later on.

“The introduction of Wild Selections is a natural step in the work that Bumble Bee has been involved in to support responsible global fisheries management,” Lischewski said. “As a founding member of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) working alongside WWF and other leaders in marine resource management, we saw a great opportunity to introduce a line of MSC-certified products that would help further our collective mission to promote sustainable fishing practices and to protect fisheries stocks for generations to come.”

Bill Fox, VP and managing director of fisheries at WWF, sees the introduction of the MSC-certified Wild Selections product line as proof of Bumble Bee’s deep commitment to sustainable seafood, one that gives consumers the confidence that their seafood was caught sustainably and also the opportunity to contribute to improving the health of the world’s oceans.

“We applaud Bumble Bee’s commitment to sustainable seafood and willingness to give consumers an opportunity to directly contribute to driving positive change on the water and improving the health of the world’s oceans,” he said, TriplePundit reports.

Wild Selections® will be managed outside of Bumble Bee’s core franchise and business structure.

According to figures from the WWF, 55 per cent of fisheries around the world are fished to the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), while 30 per cent have already been pushed past their biological limits and into depletion.
