An Almost 50% Contraction Compared to the Previous Year Due to the Softening of the US Market

OTTAWA — Canada's fish and seafood export operations face a complex commercial landscape at the start of the catching season. According to official macroeconomic data consolidated by Statistics Canada, exports of frozen snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) suffered a severe historical contraction during the month of April 2026. Total global shipments plummeted to 5,610 metric tons, representing a vertical drop of 47.4% compared to the 10,684 metric tons recorded in the same period of the previous year, reducing the commercial flow practically by half.

Despite the drastic reduction in processed volumes, the Canadian industry's pricing strategy managed to maintain firm ground in international markets. The average unit price under the Free on Board (FOB) modality rose outstandingly to reach 31.67 C$/kg. When applying the dual currency conversion required for global financial analysis, this figure is equivalent to 22.99 US$/kg. For market operators managing volumes in the imperial system, the exchange value stood at 14.36 C$/lb, equivalent to 10.42 US$/lb.

Geographical analysis of foreign trade reveals that the season started with an almost absolute dependence on a single reference buyer. The globalized volume of the frozen line was overwhelmingly concentrated in the United States, a market that absorbed the entirety of the 5,610 metric tons dispatched, while traditional Asian hubs such as Japan and China maintained temporary records at 0 metric tons during the examined month. This contrasts with the 10,669 metric tons consolidated by the US market in April of the previous cycle.

In a parallel manner, border control agencies and the United States National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) validated this downward trend in their own macroeconomic customs reports. NMFS import audits confirmed the receipt of 5,578 metric tons of frozen crab of Canadian origin. The figure, which shows a marginal standard variance with respect to the source data, ratifies a decrease of 47.9% when compared to the 10,704 metric tons imported by the United States in the previous fiscal year.

In contrast to the crisis in the frozen sector, the high-value seafood segment commercialized under the modality of Total Live and Fresh Crab showed signs of dynamism and stability, totaling 353 metric tons of monthly global volume at an average price of 32.21 C$/kg (23.51 US$/kg). This specialized niche was solidly led by demand from China, a country that captured 325 metric tons with a quotation value of 31.60 C$/kg (23.07 US$/kg), consolidating itself as the main driver for fresh shipments of Canadian crab.
