Galicia will help develop fishing and aquaculture potential in Sechura Bay
(PERU, 10/17/2018)
Two technicians of CETMAR Foundation, under Xunta de Galicia, will remain in Sechura Bay until October 26 to gather information on the current situation of this coastal area of Peru and analyze the demographic, social, cultural, economic, environmental and political factors that condition their development.
The objective of this mission, sponsored by the Galician Cooperation, is to identify the main actors and their role in the development of this coastal area, as well as the potential and threats of the fishing and aquaculture sectors of the area. Further goals include the intention to seek synergies and strategies of cooperation that contribute to the growth of this coastal environment and its communities.
To this end, CETMAR experts are holding meetings with representatives of different institutions at all levels, such as the Ministry of Production and the National Fisheries Health Agency (SANIPES), the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE) and the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES), as well as representatives of Spanish Cooperation and the European Union in Peru.
The contacts will continue in the next days with meetings with the regional and provincial governments of the district of Piura and with the local authorities and extension agents of Sechura, as well as with the fishing communities and organizations, transformers and marketers in order to obtain a complete image of the sector and identify the actors that intervene in the whole process.
The technical mission also includes the field visit of the projects financed by the Galician Cooperation in this area of Peru and a subsequent workshop for sharing and establishing a map of the actors in the area with the organizations involved.
All the information collected in these 15 days will be subject to further analysis in order to prepare a final identification report in which CETMAR Foundation will define the strategic lines of action for the development of the fishing and aquaculture sector in Sechura Bay, conclusions and technical recommendations that could serve as a basis for future cooperation projects in the district of Piura.
Both in the previous tasks of preparation of the mission and now in the field, the Galician experts have the collaboration of entities that are acting in this area, as it is the case of non-governmental organizations Ayuda en Acción and Escuela Campesina de Educación y Salud (ESCAES), as well as ANFACO-CECOPESCA, with experience in this area of Peru.
The presence of Galician actors linked to fisheries and aquaculture in Peru has a long history, and several development cooperation actions were promoted by Xunta de Galicia following a memorandum of understanding signed in 2004 with the Peruvian government.
At present, Sechura Bay, one of the largest in Peru with nearly 90 kilometres of coastline, stands out for its natural wealth and for an important socio-economic activity that experienced a remarkable growth in recent years. In this context, the Galician government now raises the need to launch new cooperation actions in the district of Piura.
