The second annual conference to discuss the latest consensus in seafood nutrition science will take place on September 14.

Seafood Nutrition Partnership Announces Second Annual State of the Science Symposium

  (UNITED STATES, 7/23/2018)

The Seafood Nutrition Partnership’s Scientific and Nutrition Advisory Council will host its second annual State of the Science Symposium on Friday, September 14 in Washington, DC.

During the symposium, leaders in global nutrition will present on this year’s themes of Brain Health, Aquaculture, and Consumer Education, framing these topics within the latest consensus on all aspects of seafood nutrition.

Seafood Nutrition Partnership's mission is to inspire a healthier America through partnerships and outreach to raise awareness about the essential nutritional benefits of eating seafood.

“After a successful first symposium last year we are excited to bring together this group of experts to discuss and educate on seafood nutrition for human health,” said Linda Cornish, president and founder of Seafood Nutrition Partnership (SNP). “I’m looking forward to another productive and insightful scientific symposium.”

Similar to the prior year, the educational presentations will combine technical analysis with more digestible points for non-specialists, making it accessible to a wide range of audience members and industries.

Seafood Nutrition Partnership aims to build awareness about the essential nutritional benefits from eating seafood at least twice a week.

The speakers for the Seafood, Omega-3, and Brain Health session are: Captain Joseph R. Hibbeln, MD, Acting Chief, Section of Nutritional Neurosciences in the Laboratory of Membrane Biophysics & Biochemistry at the US Government National Institutes of Health; Dr. Robert K McNamara, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience Director at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; Dr. Adina Michael-Titus, Professor of Neuroscience at the Centre for Trauma Sciences in London; Dr. Bill Harris, Omega-3 Expert and President of OmegaQuant.

Seafood provides unique health benefits as a lean protein and is the best source for Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA), which are healthy fats essential to human health and development.

“This is a unique opportunity for global leaders in human nutrition to understand something of the breadth of science around seafood - nutrition and health, and sustainability,” said Dr. Tom Brenna, Chair of the SNP Scientific and Nutrition Advisory Council and Professor of pediatrics, of chemistry, and of nutrition at the Dell Medical School and College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. “This forum again brings together leaders in the science of seafood nutrition and how it plays a key role in human and planetary health.”

Seafood Nutrition Partnership is addressing America's public health crisis through a seafood-rich diet.

The 2015-2020 USDA/HHS Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends at least two servings of seafood per week and at least 250 mg of omega-3s EPA+DHA per day to support heart and brain health as part of a healthy diet. Only 10 percent of Americans eat seafood twice a week and, on average, Americans take in 80 mg of omega-3s EPA+DHA per day.
