Kawésqar communities urge to stop salmon farming in Patagonia
(CHILE, 5/4/2018)
Greenpeace deems the determination to stop granting salmon concessions in the Magallanes Region as a "triumph of David against Goliath." This means that, provisionally, 81 per cent of the applications that were being processed in the area are frozen.
The measure, which responds to a request made by the Kawésqar communities using the Lafquenche Law through the instrument Protected Marine Coastal Space for Indigenous Peoples (ECMPO) is a blow to the salmon industry, which seeks to extend its operations with 344 applications in the waters of Patagonia.
"We are happy about the news that offers hope that what has happened to the seas in Los Lagos Region is not repeated in Patagonia waters. The visit of the icebreaker Arctic Sunrise has not been in vain, but the true triumph of this battle belongs to the Kawésqar communities that have not stopped protecting an unequaled environmental heritage. They are an example of courage and perseverance," said Estefanía González, coordinator of Oceans of Greenpeace.
From the NGO, nevertheless, they requested people to be alert as the decision is transitory, but that does not assure the final destination that the salmon farming expansion will have in Magallanes. In this sense, for Greenpeace, it is clear that the industry is going to counterattack with force in order not to lose the opportunity to expand its industry.
The Kawésqar Communities for the Defense of the Sea also sees it that way: "We are vigilant against the lobbying actions, exercise pressure on the authorities and watch out the misinformation that the salmon industry is performing to accelerate the approval of new salmon farming concessions in the Kawésqar territory and sea," they explain.
The news appears at the end of the two weeks’ sailing through Patagonia of the icebreaker ship Arctic Sunrise, which was documenting and warning about the possible damage that would bring the expansion of the salmon industry in Patagonia waters.
