FDA refuses five shrimp shipments contaminated with banned antibiotics in January
(UNITED STATES, 2/9/2018)
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January refused five shrimp shipments due to the presence of prohibited antibiotics, out of a total of 116 total seafood entry line refusals.
The five entry line refusals were sent by two companies: Sea Fresh from Bangladesh, Zhangzhou TaiWang Food Co., Ltd., from China.
The Bangladeshi company was refused four shipments for shrimp contaminated with nitrofurans, while the Chinese company was refused a shipment of shrimp contaminated with residues of veterinary drugs.
The FDA also refused fourteen shrimp entry lines because of salmonella. Thirteen of these shipments came from India, sent by Falcon Marine Exports Pvt. Ltd. (one shipment), Sandhya Aqua Exports Pvt. Ltd. (one shipment), and Jagadeesh Marine Exports (eleven shipments). The other consignment of shrimp contaminated with salmonella had been sent by PT Bumi Menara Internusa, from Indonesia.
The Southern Shrimp Alliance emphasizes that some foreign shrimp producers and importers have minimized the threat posed by the antibiotics used in shrimp farming, and have declined to provide a justification for the industry not to eradicate the use of antibiotics in countries such as India and Vietnam.
