EnviroFlight Wins The 'DSM Innovation Award' In Aquaculture

  (UNITED STATES, 6/20/2016)

EnviroFlight, LLC has received the 'DSM Innovation Award' in aquaculture at the AquaVision 2016 conference in Stavanger, Norway.

The award honours transformative innovation within the aquaculture industry and it was created to reflect the role of AquaVision as a global forum in promoting innovation in aquaculture, as well as DSM Nutritional Products' unique history and dedication in providing industry leading micro-nutrient innovations to aquaculture worldwide.

EnviroFlight uses the co-product from breweries, ethanol production, and pre-consumer food waste as a feedstock for Black Soldier Fly larvae (Hermetia illucens). The larvae feed off and bioconvert the material. By doing so, the frass — the waste product created by insects after digesting the feedstock — becomes a high protein, low fat feedstuff for omnivorous species such as tilapia, freshwater prawns, catfish. The material is also beneficial as a protein source for poultry, swine and cattle.

EnviroFlight has developed proprietary technologies that enable the rearing of non-pathogenic black soldier fly (BSF) larvae in an industrially scalable manner. This innovative and responsible approach has considerable potential within the USD 60 billion global animal feed industry as it will provide an environmentally-friendly, toxin-free, sustainable source of high-value nutrients.

The larvae are used as a high protein, high fat ingredient for carnivorous fish including rainbow trout, perch, bass, and bluegill.

EnviroFlight's scalable approach utilizing BSF larvae opens the door to a plentiful source of high quality nutrients for the aquaculture industry.

Notably, within the fish market, BSF larvae may be more representative of the typical diet of these natural insectivores than soymeal and other plant-based meal regimens.

Additionally fishmeal and fish oil are multi-billion dollar products critical to aquaculture's continued growth, yet demand is outpacing the fairly inflexible supply for these valuable feeds whose manufacture are heavily dependent on wild-caught fish.

In addition to reducing the depletion of marine ecosystems and decreasing dependence on non-sustainable protein sources, EnviroFlight's approach utilizing BSF larvae offers significant potential to convert food surpluses into valuable proteins and fats to help meet the growing demands for aquaculture feed.

The entire system is comprised of proprietary bioreactor, breeding, and nursery systems. The system is designed to be located anywhere in the world and optimized for operation in developing nations. The breeding system is able to produce mating events and eggs in any climate. Because of this there is a continual source of eggs in all weather conditions.

Glen Courtright, President and Founder of EnviroFlight, who accepted the award and a prize of EUR 10.000 at the AquaVision 2016 Conference, stated, "With over 9 billion people expected on the planet by 2050, environmentally responsible aquaculture solutions that drive improvements in the global food supply chain are necessary.  EnviroFlight technology holds significant promise to realize the substantial potential of insect bioconversion to help meet this need."

About EnviroFlight

EnviroFlight, LLC, a joint venture between Interexon Corporation (NYSE: XON) and Darling Ingredients Inc. (NYSE: DAR), is a leader in sustainable animal and plant nutrition aiming to drive transformative change in the global food supply.

EnviroFlight's mission is to develop sustainable animal and plant nutrients using regionally available, low-value materials, emphasizing: production of nutrients in a socially responsible way; eliminating toxins, hormones, and antibiotics from food supply; and reducing the environmental and financial costs to food supply.

The larvae are cooked, dried and converted into a meal that is 40% protein and 46% fat. The oils can be extracted, which boosts the protein content to above 70%.
