More companies abstain from attending Global Seafood Expo
(BELGIUM, 4/2/2016)
Major Norwegian companies Leroy Seafood Group and Cermaq have announced their decision no to attend the Global Seafood Expo, which is held this month in Brussels due to concerns about security after the recent terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital.
These companies join others who have also expressed their decision not to participate this year in the important international seafood fair, including the Icelandic company HB Grandi and the French fishery products distributor R&O Seafood Gastronomy.
Other firms that will not be represented this year are the US companies Trident Seafoods, Copper River Seafood and E&E Foods, as well as the company Pacific Andes International Holdings, based in Hong Kong.
Despite these announcements, the organizers of the Global Seafood Expo expect that the number of companies that have decided not to be present this year does not exceed 2 per cent of participants.
More than 26,600 buyers, suppliers, media and other professionals in the fisheries sector in more than 140 countries attended the 2015 edition, as Diversified Communications, the company organizing the event, reported.
"The safety of our participants is of utmost importance to us and we are taking all necessary measures to ensure a safe environment for the upcoming exposition," the company pointed out shortly after the occurrence of the attacks on Brussels airport and an underground station.
In addition, Diversified Communications said that because of the attacks on 22 March, it was reviewing security protocols with Belgian authorities and with those from the city of Brussels.
This year’s event will be held in April 26-28.
