A total of 64 jiggers participate in this year's fishing season for Illex squid, which began two weeks ago.
According to the National Undersecretariat of Fisheries, 39 jiggers are already operating in the area of Puerto Deseado, Santa Cruz, while the rest of the fleet, 25 ships, is preparing to join the fishery in the coming days.
Industry reports indicate that fishing yields are being variable, with an average of about 20 tonnes per day and small sizes, as it is usual at this time of year.
During 2015, some 117.039 tonnes of Illex squid were landed in Argentina, of which about 95,000 tonnes were exported generating USD 104.5 million in revenue, figures that the sector expects to exceed this year.
Meanwhile, the Government of the Falkland Islands on Sunday reported that the squid season began in this area, for which 105 fishing licenses have been issued. Meanwhile, it is expected that the Loligo squid season will begin on 24 February with the participation of 16 fishing vessels.
Speaking to Mercopress, the Director of Natural Resources of the islands, John Barton, said that the season last year hit a record of Illex catch, with 380,000 tonnes.
Meanwhile, Phyl Rendell, a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Islands, reiterated the importance of having a "coordinated scientific effort to manage the fishery in southwest Atlantic," and expressed the hope that the new Argentine government will consider again the exchange of scientific information concerning the fishery resources.
