Shrimp and squid offset other exports drop
(ARGENTINA, 5/28/2015)
Argentina exported 117,419 tonnes of seafood from January to April 2015, a figure that shows a marginal rise of 0.5 per cent over the same period of 2014, when 116,738 tonnes had been shipped abroad.
The growth experienced by the squid (Illex argentinus) and shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) helped offset lower volumes of fish.
According to statistics from the National Health and Food Quality Service (SENASA) in the first four month-period of this year 61,628 tonnes of seafood were exported, 5.4 per cent less than in the same period of 2014 (65,078 tonnes).
A total of 55,791 tonnes of shellfish was exported, 7.9 per cent more than in the same period last year, when 51,660 tonnes had been sold abroad.
The highest export records were those of squid, with 29,117 tonnes, representing a 7.1 per cent increase over the 27,171 tonnes that had been exported in the first four-month period of 2014.
It was followed by hake (Merluccius hubbsi), with 26,565 tonnes, 18.5 per cent less than during the first four months of last year (32,572 tonnes), and by shrimp, with 24,061 tonnes, 17.4 per cent more than in the same period last year (20,482 tonnes).
Among the resources that increased their shipments abroad is hoki (Macruronus magellanicus), whose sales grew by 85.4 per cent, changing from 2,762 tonnes between January and April of 2014 to 5,121 tonnes in the same period of 2015.
Exports of trout (Cynoscion striatus) increased 21.9 per cent, changing from 2,625 tonnes to 3,200 tonnes; those of pollock (Genypterus blacodes) rose by 10 per cent from 704 to 775 tonnes; and those of fin rays (Potamotrygon brachyura) increased 107 per cent, from 1,889 tonnes to 3,911 tonnes.
The species that recorded declines when comparing the first four months of 2015 with the same period last year were:
- Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri): 21.8 per cent (from 5,941 to 4,649 tonnes);
- Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica): 68.7 per cent (from 2,429 to 761 tonnes);
- Patagonian anchovy (Engraulis anchovy): 20.4 per cent (from 4,610 to 3673 tonnes).
