Slight increase in shrimp exports in first quarter

Argentina exported 75,385 tonnes of seafood between January and March 2015, a figure which shows a decrease of 4.9 per cent over the same period in 2014, when 79,188 tonnes were shipped abroad.
According to statistics from the National Health and Food Quality Service (SENASA), in the first quarter of this year 46,505 tonnes of fish were exported, 3.8 per cent less than in the same period of 2014 (48 311 tonnes).
In addition, 28,880 tonnes of seafood were sent abroad, 6.5 per cent less than in the same period last year, when 30,877 tonnes were sold abroad.
The highest export registries were those of the common hake (Merluccius hubbsi), with 20,344 tonnes, a figure representing 14.4 per cent less compared to the 23,743 tonnes exported in the first quarter of 2014.
They were followed by those of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri), with 18,020 tonnes, representing 5.2 per cent more than during the same period last year (17,114 tonnes).
In addition, more stingray (Potamotrygon brachyura) was exported: 1,255 tonnes compared to 2,732 tonnes in 2015 (117.6 per cent); hoki (Macruronus magellanicus), whose shipments changed from 2,124 tonnes to 3,678 tonnes (73.1 per cent); weakfish (Cynoscion striatus), changing from 1,674 to 2,107 tonnes (25.8 per cent); and pollock (Genypterus blacodes), changing from 521 to 599 tonnes (14.9 per cent).
The species that recorded declines when comparing the first quarter of 2015 with those last year were:
- Squid (Illex argentinus): 14.5 per cent (from 10,786 tonnes to 9,223 tonnes);
- Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica): 61.1 per cent (from 1,956 to 761 tonnes);
- Croaker (Micropogonias furnieri): 15.2 per cent (from 4,087 to 3,466 tonnes);
- Patagonian anchovy (Engraulis anchoita): 14.6 per cent (from 4,160 to 3,553 tonnes).
