Freezer tuna fleet demonstrates commitment to selective fishing
(SPAIN, 12/7/2012)
The National Association of Tuna Freezer Vessels (Anabac) ensures that tuna freezer vessels continue implementing the Code of Good Practice for improving tuna purse seiner selectivity.
The organization reported that crews of tuna vessels who are ascribed to the Anabac purse seine tuna fleet participated in workshops last month designed to improve fishing net selectivity, reduce the impact of this practice in the marine environment and ensure fisheries sustainability.
These workshops were held in the facilities of the Technological Centre of Marine and Food Research (AZTI-Tecnalia), with the collaboration of the International Foundation for Seafood Sustainability (ISSF).
The discussed issues were mainly focused on two points:
- Reducing the gill and avoiding the possible mortality of sensitive species: non-gilling objects, handling practices, etc.;
- The mortality reduction of other non-target resources: acoustic discrimination and escape windows.
This training was attended by owners, captains and chiefs of Anabac seine tuna fleet, who were able to express their views and discuss possible measures that can be carried out and the most appropriate options.
These workshops fall under the Code of Good Practice signed by Anabac in February 2012.
After the sessions, AZTI representatives held meetings with the managers of shipping companies so as to become aware of what happened in the workshops.
Anabac stressed that the great awareness that exists among the ship owner members of this organization became evident regarding the implementation of the best possible fishing practices.
