El Corte Ingles in favor of sustainable fisheries
(SPAIN, 4/20/2011)
The business group El Corte Ingles will begin implementing a new policy for the responsible purchase of fishery products, in order to contribute to the sustainability of the seas and species.
The company announced it will work together with its suppliers in order to achieve a mutual commitment with regards to quality, assurance and security of marketed products.
Under this initiative, El Corte Ingles established several stages of implementation and evaluation "to ensure future consumer demand and the sustainability of all fish-related industries."
First of all, the company will require its suppliers to avoid the capture of depleted, vulnerable, threatened and endangered fishery resources or of those with insufficient information on the stock status or protected by national and international laws.
It will also encourage non-aggressive fishing techniques and the reduction of indiscriminate trawling catches. In addition, suppliers will be urged to avoid using harmful methods for other marine species or for their habitats and the traceability of products will be improved, from the moment they are caught until they reach the consumer.
This project is part of the social responsibility policy carried out by El Corte Ingles.
