Seabream sales slip in Mercamadrid

  (SPAIN, 4/6/2010)

Mercamadrid sold 1,541 tonnes of seabream in the first quarter of the year, 4.6 per cent less than in same period of 2009 when 1,616 tonnes were commercialised.

The average price was of EUR 4.83 per kilogramme, that is, 14.7 per cent more than in the same quarter of last year when the kg fetched EUR 4.21.

In relation to the origin of the seabream, statistical data furnished by Mercamadrid indicates:

  • Valencia: 336 tonnes;
  • Murcia: 319 tonnes;
  • Castellon: 134 tonnes;
  • Granada: 132 tonnes;

These four Spanish provinces contributed 60 per cent of the seabream commercialised in the three first months of the year. Greece and France, with 179 tonnes and 113 tonnes, respectively, led in international shipments between January and March 2010.

In terms of the fall in supply, several experts consulted deemed it mainly due to the closing of companies in the Mediterranean Sea sector, and to lower production from a decrease in fry sowings.

Similarly, they said that the increase in the price of seabream could hold for some time, MisPeces reports.

Mercamadrid revealed that the average prices of seabream, according to size, were:

  • EUR 4.50 per kg for sizes of less than 600 grams;
  • EUR 4.90 per kg for those of 600 grams to 1 kg;
  • EUR 8.50 for sizes of more than 1 kg.
