Alcampo Committed to Ocean Preservation
(SPAIN, 1/5/2010)
Alcampo, Grupo Auchan's hypermarket chain, keeps a firm commitment to ocean preservation; over a year ago, its fisheries stopped trading red tuna due to its classification as an endangered species.
For this same reason, during 2009 the chain stopped distributing plaice and three species of rockfish (Sesbastes marinus, Sebastes mentella, Sebastes faciatus), and since October it no longer trades endangered sharks, distributing solely and exclusively those species not threatened, including small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canícula), large-spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus stellaris), smooth-hound fish (Mustelus mustelus), starry smooth-hound (Mustelus asterias), blackspotted smooth-hound (Mustelus punctulatus) and spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), the latter being only the ones that come from the East Coast of the United States, where stocks are correctly managed. This decision was made by Auchan Group's hypermarkets in 12 countries.
Furthermore, Alcampo has been working for years in the development of its brand, Producción Controlada Auchan, which identifies a wide range of fresh food produced in collaboration with small and medium companies, and guarantees maximum food and quality safety, while recovering traditional flavors and emphasizing respect for the environment and animal welfare. In the fishery sector, Alcampo counts on four species: mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), salmon (Salmo salar) and trout (Oncorhynchuss mykiss).
