Salmones Camanchaca climbs four positions to be considered one of the most sustainable producers worldwide

  (CHILE, 12/16/2022)
  • This initiative consolidates the sustainable performance of the 60 largest protein producers in the world in environmental (E), social (S) and corporate governance (G) matters, classifying companies as low, medium, or high risk based on compliance of its ESG policies.
  • Some standards evaluated by the index include the management of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), waste and pollution, use of antibiotics, food safety, animal welfare, deforestation, and biodiversity among ten aspects considered to quantify the levels of risk and opportunity of the companies, which allowed Salmones Camanchaca to climb four places in the ranking.

Santiago - The Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index, published on December 6, consolidates the sustainable performance of the 60 largest protein producers in the world, including meat, dairy, and aquaculture fish industries, around the measurement of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. In this new edition, Salmones Camanchaca got excellent results, reaching sixth place worldwide, being the first company in the industry in Chile.

Some standards evaluated by the index include the management of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), waste and pollution, use of antibiotics, food safety, animal welfare, deforestation, and biodiversity among ten aspects considered to quantify the levels of risk and opportunity of the companies, which allowed Salmones Camanchaca to climb four places in the ranking -to sixth place- compared to 2021, leaded by the Norwegian Mowi.

“Being considered the sixth most sustainable global producer in the industry in this important index reflects our commitment to the environment, social welfare and good corporate behavior. Understanding sustainability as a process of continuous improvement that requires a systematic and permanent evaluation is what allows us to face the challenge of continuing to improve day by day, and the conclusions of this ranking are the result of the effort of Salmones Camanchaca to materialize this commitment in its management”, says Alfredo Tello, Sustainability Manager at Salmones Camanchaca.

Somewhat, these results are aligned with the work that the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) promotes worldwide to position salmon as a healthy and nutritious product that can be farmed sustainably in harmony with the environment and communities. Making it a contribution to a diet rich in protein, fatty acids, omega-3, vitamins and essential minerals such as D, B-12 and B-5, recognized by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As Tello added, "undoubtedly, the multiple nutritional attributes of salmon and the efforts made by the industry to produce it in a sustainable manner are reflected in the results of this fifth version of the index, led by actors from the world of aquaculture, who occupy seven of the top ten places in the ranking, including Salmones Camanchaca”.
