We hope to recover pre-pandemic exports

The regional director of ProChile, Claudio Villarroel, highlighted yesterday the 9.8% growth in exports registered in the first five months of this year. “Last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic we had a 13.4% drop in regional exports, therefore this accumulated growth in the first five months of 2021 allows us to be more optimistic that during this year we will recover. the levels of foreign trade that we had in the pre-pandemic ”, explained the regional director of ProChile, Claudio Villarroel Buxton.
Exports so far in 2021 are concentrated in three sectors: fishing and aquaculture with shipments for US $ 190 million and a growth of 37%; in manufacturing with US $ 124 million and a fall of 16%; and agricultural products with US $ 22 million and a growth of 16%.
“The fishing and aquaculture sector is the one showing the greatest recovery, in particular due to shipments of salmon and trout, which have grown by 46%. There is also an increase in shipments of deep cod that reach US $ 11 million. Other seafood exported from Magellan are Patagonian spider crab (Lithodes santolla) (US $ 8 million), southern hake (US $ 5 million), Patagonian crab (Paralomis granulosa) (US $ 2 million), conger eel (US $ 2 million) and sea urchins (US $ 1 million) " Villarroel said.
“In manufacturing, methanol shipments reached US $ 116 million in the period. Wool follows with US $ 6 million. Finally, in agricultural products, Magallanes exported US $ 18 million in sheep meat this year, with a growth of 15%, followed by animal feed with US $ 1 million ”, he added.
