The overall objective of PrimeFish is to enhance the economic sustainability and competitiveness of European fisheries and aquaculture sectors
New tool determines seafood consumers profile from five European countries
(SPAIN, 2/4/2019)
The results of four years of work on the European market of fishery products carried out within the framework of a project in which Galicia participated, will allow the industry, policy makers and users themselves to make better decisions in this area.
The Technological Center of the Sea (CETMAR) and its partners in the European project PrimeFish, closed four years of research on the European market of seafood products with the presentation of a tool that determines the profile of consumers in Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and France, their interests and preferences, their level of consumption and trends in future behavior.
►Presentation of the proyect at CETMAR
These results, which were presented at the final conference of the project held in Vigo, will benefit the fishing and aquaculture sector companies, seafood consumers and public authorities when it comes to guiding their policies in these areas.
The research aimed to improve the competitiveness of products derived from fishing and aquaculture, and the work developed since 2015, with more than a thousand surveys to consumers in each country, were poured into an innovative tool based on big data, which also incorporated all the information obtained by PrimeFish researchers in interviews with companies in the sector on market segmentation and competition, or on certain seafood.
This prototype software, which could be tested by the participants in the final conference of PrimeFish, allows industries, policy makers or the general public to make queries adapted to their interests and define the ideal profile of the consumer, determine how much they would be willing to pay for its products or obtain indicators on competitiveness, analysis of the value chain or price trends.
"This application will allow sea workers, defendant companies and market analysts, among other agents, to improve productivity in the value chain and reorient their strategies," explained the technical secretary general of the Xunta de Galicia Ministry of the Sea, Isabel Concheiro, at the opening of the final conference of the Primefish project.
"It is one of the best current examples of the benefits of applying innovation and big data to our sector. An innovative forecasting tool that we consider the best support to strengthen the competitiveness of our sector in an increasingly globalized purchase, " said Rosa Quintana, representative of the department.
Those responsible for the project highlighted the benefits that both the information gathering work carried out these years and the new tool that brings it together will have for consumers, by helping them choose products adapted to their needs, as well as for companies, which may opt for most demanded products, as well as for public authorities when drawing their strategies.
►Project partners PrimeFish
CETMAR, who was in charge at PrimeFish to coordinate contacts with industries and policy makers in order to obtain their opinion on the markets of fishery and aquaculture products, considers extending this work to the most demanded species in Galicia if the companies of the sector have an interest in the tool.
With funding from the European Horizon 2020 program and from the hand of policy makers and industry, the PrimeFish consortium brought together experts from 16 research centers, companies and universities in Europe, Canada and Vietnam and worked on the analysis of the value chain of seafood products in more than ten countries.
