NZ King Salmon withdraws salmon products for possible contamination with listeria
(NEW ZEALAND, 1/17/2019)
New Zealand King Salmon Co. Ltd decided to recall from the market a batch of two salmon products that could be contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
The recalled products are Regal Cold Smoked Sliced Salmon Twin Pack 200g and Southern Ocean Salmon Pieces 500g packs, labelled M362D and M362N.
Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive bacterium with flagella that causes listeriosis.
Andrew Clark, chief financial officer of New Zealand King Salmon, said the results of tests recently received suggest that a single sample of the item being recalled contained listeria.
“We have conducted testing of a further 60 samples, where Listeria was not detected. This indicates that contamination, if present, is at very low level. However, based on this single abnormal result we are taking the precautionary action of recalling the whole batch,” he explained.
The company asks consumers to check batch numbers and not consume the affected salmon, which can be returned for a refund.
Until now, there have been no notified cases of illness from eating the salmon.
According to the Ministry for Primary Industries, listeriosis (commonly known as listeria) is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease. Although less common than campylobacter and salmonella, it has a high death rate, particularly among vulnerable groups, which are pregnant women, newborn babies, elderly people and people with weakened immune systems.
