ECB’s fishmeal obtains Friend of the Sea certification
(ITALY, 11/13/2018)
The Italian firm ECB Company has obtained Friend of the Sea certification for fishmeal sourced from tuna processing by-products and trimmings.
Friend of the Sea certification for sustainable fish feed, fishmeal and fish oil and omega-3 oil ensures that the fishmeal originates only from the NGO approved fisheries or from trimmings and by-cuts and that a full chain of custody is in place.

The complete traceability of the product is maintained throughout the supply chain from the fishing vessel to the finished product ensuring that mixing with non-certified raw materials will not occur.

ECB was founded in 1966 as a company technically and ethically devoted to the processing of fresh poultry slaughtering by-products for dry pet food. During the years, it has established itself as one of the most relevant players in the market, supplying a range of well-known pet food brands. More recently, it has decided to apply the same innovative technology which allows to recuperate 100 per cent of fish processing bycuts.
From July 2017 ECB has been acquired by SARIA Group, headquartered in Selm, Germany, which focuses mainly on producing high-quality proteins and fats from animal by-products.
SARIA is also active in renewable energies and is a significant provider of services to the agriculture and food industries. The company employs around 8,000 people at 180 locations across 19 countries.
“We welcome ECB in the Friend of the Sea project as a perfect example of circular economy applied to the seafood industry” comments Paolo Bray, founder and director of Friend of the Sea.
“We highly encourage our certified companies to collaborate in order to develop the right technology able to make all the production process sustainable,” Bray concluded.
