Newsan reactivates Vieira Argentina SA operations

As the shrimp season is about to start, Grupo Newsan announced the reactivation of the entire fleet of Vieira Argentina SA, after nearly three years of inactivity.

Through its export business unit Newsan Food, the group, which is a leader in Argentina in the manufacture, marketing and distribution of consumer electronics, will reactivate the seven fishing vessels and the refrigeration plant of Vieira Argentina in Puerto Deseado.

The ships -- five beam trawlers and two squid vessels -- have a total hold capacity of 560 tonnes, and in the coming months will be devoted to fishing for shrimp and squid, which will be frozen on board for export.

"It's a great achievement to have reactivated operations in Vieira. The return to the sea of the seven vessels results in the recovery of about 300 jobs considering the crew and processing and freezing plant staff in Puerto Deseado of the fishing industry in Santa Cruz, and an annual turnover estimated at USD 40 million," said Miguel Glikman, Newsan Food director.

The agreement with Vieira took place in the context of the repeal of the 3287 Provincial Law through which it was declared that the fishing company’s assets “were a public utility subject to expropriation". Thus, an operating agreement was consolidated as well as the financial support between Newsan Food and Vieira Argentina for an amount close to USD 10 million in working capital for reviving the fleet and its ground operations.

As part of its expansion plans in the fisheries sector, Newsan Food is building three new vessels in domestic shipyards, which it hopes to launch in September. The investment for this project is USD 6 million and is expected to increase annual shrimp export for USD 20 million.

With the reactivation of the ships belonging to Vieira, the company expects to increase its total volume of exports and consolidate itself as the largest exporter of fishery products in the country.

Newsan is a leading industrial group with national capitals in Argentina as to manufacture, marketing and distribution of consumer electronics and household goods. It was born in 1991 from the merger of the local company Sansei SA and Sanyo Electric Trading Co., from Japan.
