Alaska halibut fishery to maintain FAO-based RFM Certification

The team completing Alaska halibut fishery's (AHF) second annual audit recommended it can maintain the RFM certification of the FAO Based Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification Programme.
The goal of this assessment, requested by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI), was to monitor any changes since the previous audit finished in mid-2012 and to determine whether any changes need to be made with regards to management, regime and regulation. It was also intended to decide whether the applicant is keeping consistent practices and following the committee’s requirements
The 2nd Surveillance Report, indicates the lack of nonconformances was not identified to imply the need to implement corrective measures but it points out several issues regarding the estimation of bycatch in the halibut fleet were singled out to be reviewed.
The certification covers the Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) commercial fisheries using benthic longline gear within the IPHC’s Regulatory Areas 2C, 3A, 3B, 4B and 4CDE, within Alaska jurisdiction (200 nautical miles EEZ), under International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC), federal (National Marine Fisheries Services/North Pacific Fishery Management Council) and state (Alaska Department of Fish and Game) management.
The assessment was conducted by a team of Global Trust appointed Assessors, comprising of one externally contracted fishery expert.
