Sainsbury's to offer Scottish langoustine

Scotland's west coast prawn fleet will be supplying supermarket chain Sainsbury's with its products graded as high quality. They will appear in the shelves of about 500 of Sainsbury's 800 UK outlets and be branded as Scottish langoustine.

The fleet is also in discussions with another supermarket company about supplying it with shellfish.

The fishermen interpreted the deal and ongoing talks as the UK’s recognition of the quality of their prawns and the sustainability of the fishery.

This will be the first time shoppers will be able to acquire UK-caught langoustines that have not previously been frozen, Daily Record reports.

Shoppers will be able to find the Fresh Scottish West Coast Langoustine in all of Sainsbury's 390 fish counter stores.

John Hermse, chief executive of Mallaig and Northwest Fishermen's Association, expressed enthusiasm for the deal with Sainsbury's, BBC reports.

"Very often Scottish langoustine is seen as scampi and in some supermarkets as a buy-one-get-one-free product,” he said.

“We've always thought this was not the way to market such a fantastic, premium, flagship product. We've got to realise what we've got and market it accordingly," he asserted.

Andy McTeare, Sainsbury's fish buyer, said the new deal symbolizes the retailer’s interest in collaborating with the fishing industry.

"This is another great example of where we continue to work in partnership with fishermen and suppliers to offer the best quality UK caught fish,” he remarked.

He also wants to reduce the import of prawns.

"We are keen to boost demand for langoustines and reduce reliance on imported warm water prawns. As well as adding a delicious product to our fish counters, it is benefiting fishermen as well - supporting the whole supply chain,” he stated.
