New functional feed reduces mortality in Mediterranean farms and supports fish health during high-risk seasons
 BioMar has introduced SmartCare Defence, a new functional feed developed to strengthen European seabass during periods of heightened bacterial risk in Mediterranean aquaculture. The product targets one of the sector’s most persistent challenges: seasonal bacterial outbreaks that continue to impact survival rates and farm profitability.
Bacterial diseases remain a leading constraint in seabass production. Despite advances in vaccination, pathogens from the genera Photobacterium, Vibrio, and Aeromonas still cause significant on-farm losses. At the same time, producers are reducing reliance on medicated feeds, creating demand for nutritional strategies that enhance the fish’s natural defence mechanisms.
Developed over more than five years of research and commercial validation, SmartCare Defence combines controlled laboratory challenge trials with large-scale farm testing. The solution forms part of BioMar’s SmartCare program, which focuses on precision nutrition to address defined production risks.
 “The goal was to develop a feed solution that works with the fish’s own defence mechanisms, rather than reacting once problems occur,” said Elena Planas, Veterinarian at BioMar. “SmartCare Defence is designed for proactive use, particularly ahead of predictable high-risk periods.”
At the core of the formulation is a functional ingredient package enriched with optimized micronutrients aimed at limiting bacterial proliferation, reinforcing intestinal integrity, and strengthening immune response. In controlled challenge trials with Photobacterium damselae piscicida, the feed demonstrated a significant reduction in mortality. Comparable survival improvements were confirmed under commercial farming conditions during periods of elevated bacterial pressure.
 “It’s a new tool for a more comprehensive health management strategy,” said Bruno Noguerra, Product Manager at BioMar. “Seeing similar survival benefits in both laboratory and real-world production environments gives farmers confidence that this is a reliable and practical solution.”
Further scientific analysis, including gene expression studies in the intestine and kidney, confirmed positive effects on immune-related pathways and gut integrity.
