Produce Sets New Limits for Giant Squid Artisanal Fishing in Peru

The Ministry of Production has amended regulations for the capture of pota (Dosidicus gigas), the country's second most important fishery, adjusting fishing periods and catch limits for artisanal fleets in an effort to improve fisheries management.

LIMA — The Ministry of Production (Produce), in collaboration with the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE), has issued Ministerial Resolution N° 000288-2025-PRODUCE to readjust management measures for the artisanal fleet of giant squid, locally known as pota. This new regulation modifies R.M. N° 000123-2025-PRODUCE with the aim of optimizing the Maximum Allowable Catch Limit (LMCTP) and ensuring sustainable fisheries management.

The changes in the regulation establish new fishing periods based on the vessel's capacity, allowing for better adaptation to the species' variability.

• Vessels with a hold capacity of up to 20 cubic meters will be able to operate in two periods: from August 25 to October 31, and from November 1 to December 31.

In addition to the new deadlines, the resolution establishes that holders of artisanal fishing permits must compulsorily participate in training on the use of a digital “Landing Form.” These sessions, which must be completed by September 15, 2025, seek to optimize data registration to improve monitoring and tracking of the fishery.

Socioeconomic Impact and Adaptive Management

Giant squid has been Peru's second most important fishery since 2004, after anchovy, and is a socioeconomic pillar for the country. According to IMARPE, its annual landings exceed 500,000 tons and generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, especially in coastal regions.

The management of this species, however, presents unique challenges. Giant squid has a rapid growth rate, and its maturity varies depending on environmental and climatic factors, such as fluctuations in sea temperature. This requires an adaptive management approach to ensure long-term sustainability and protect the species' biomass. The new regulations aim to provide authorities with more precise data to make informed decisions, ensuring that this valuable fishery continues to thrive in the coming years.
