By a wide margin of the more than 140 countries that voted today, Chilean doctor Alicia Gallardo Lagno has been elected president of the aquatic animals commission of the World Health Organization. Animal, OMSA.
Gallardo, a veterinarian from the University of Chile with more than 25 years of experience in various public service positions, previously served as undersecretary of fisheries and director of Sernapesca. Additionally, during 2023 she worked as a technical advisor to the Consejo del Salmón.
From France, Gallardo was visibly moved. “I appreciate the support and take with great pride the responsibility that has been given to me. “I am committed to continuing to strengthen animal health in aquaculture for a future with multiple challenges that we are facing such as climate change and the need to produce more aquatic protein in a more sustainable way.”
Likewise, the executive director of the Salmon Council (Consejo del Salmón), Loreto Seguel, also had words for the new president.
“Chile has the duty to take charge of this tremendous opportunity, which means leading the health standards that will govern the future of this activity.
“This is a very relevant step to continue projecting salmon farming in a sustainable way, which is the second export industry in our country.”
It should be noted that Seguel led the delegation from the Chilean salmon farming world in this important meeting in which the 100 years of OMSA were also celebrated, holding multiple bilateral meetings with strategic nations for the development of aquaculture, within the framework of the seal of the Salmon Council that seeks to agree on more and better public-private alliances.
The leader of the salmon union also recognized the government's work in this matter. “It is important to thank the commitment and leadership that the Minister of Agriculture Esteban Valenzuela has had in this instance as well as the role of Hugo Araya, head of the Chilean delegation on behalf of the SAG.”
Among the new responsibilities that Dr. Alicia Gallado, whose position must assume next June, will have will be setting animal health and welfare standards, as well as giving binding recommendations for the development and improvement of trade in aquaculture products worldwide.
