Shrimp: in April fishing opens in national waters outside the closed zone

  (ARGENTINA, 3/14/2023)

The Undersecretary of Fisheries of the Nation, Carlos Liberman, stressed that the calendar will be similar to that of the last 3 years, beginning with the opening to the north without interruptions until the start of the harvest in the closed zone, which could occur between the end of May and the beginning of June

Carlos Liberman anticipated that the start of shrimp fishing to the north on the 41st parallel will begin in April, although the day has not yet been determined.

When asked about the rumor that some Patagonian companies were requesting to delay the opening of fishing outside the closed zone, Liberman clarified that no one from the fishing sector made that request.

"Nobody asked me to delay the opening of April to start fishing directly in June, I want to deny that," he said; and stressed that in April the shrimp is ready to be caught: "From the capture of the shrimp a productive movement arises that implies thousands of jobs in Patagonia and in the province of Buenos Aires for so many workers in the land industry ; because the shrimp is not only a frozen industry on board, it is also an industry that mobilizes a huge number of people and consequently vitalizes the economy of thousands of families, in Patagonia, and in the province of Buenos Aires”, he declared.

And he stressed again: "There are no biological or productive reasons for not having an opening in the north because thousands and thousands of jobs depend on that fishery, as well as the economy of many companies with plants on land and fishing vessels that they mobilize a large productive apparatus that ends up generating hundreds of millions of dollars in exports”, he emphasized.

"It's part of the dialogue"

Regarding the opening request made by chambers from Mar del Plata, Liberman maintained that it is normal for the different chambers to have different ideas about when the shrimp harvest should begin both in the northern zone and in the closed zone; "It is part of the dialogue that we have within the sector, they are visions. But I insist when it comes to defining. In addition to the opinion of the chambers, there is the opinion of the unions and the opinion of INIDEP and depending on all these variants, it is that We have a schedule that we act accordingly and it has worked well for us,” Liberman said.

And in this sense, he mentioned that in the year 2018 to 2019 the shrimp recorded a drop after several years of growth: The shrimp biomass had fallen by 27% and the landings had fallen by 20%.

“It was the first time in a long time that the shrimp recorded a drop of this nature and the challenge we had when starting this management was that this drop in biomass and this drop in landings would be amortized and grow again; and this logic that the females could spawn and reproduce without the fleet operating on that biomass in the month of February or in the month of March has been successful, at the same time, the management logic within the closed area, with grids reduced that are permanently monitored, that open and close based on biological data," he said, highlighting the recovery of the shrimp, a resource that drives the economy of a sector that involves two Patagonian provinces and Mar del Plata.

According to the journalist Roberto Garrone, "the context of what is lived in Rawson serves to graph the fight that is lived these days in fishing tied to shrimp.

The opening of an area to fish for shellfish on the 41st S, to the north of the closed area for hake for the deep-sea freezer and freshwater pole fleet, divides the waters.

The Patagonian freezer fleet wants nothing to do with that possibility. They argue that higher volume will push prices down. Both whole and tail, which from the abundance of Rawson, had a greater presence in international markets."
