Handy Assists Restaurants in Promoting Sustainability

  (UNITED STATES, 3/22/2012)

Handy International, America's oldest seafood processor, has launched an Artisanal Fish Program that sets it apart from other companies by its sourcing of "good-alternative," sustainable fish that are fully traceable and DNA tested.

Handy’s traceable Artisanal Fish Program combines four key components:

  • Only fish that appears as a “good alternative” under the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program is sourced.
  • Fish is caught by fishermen on day boats who use hand-line fishing techniques, limiting by-catch and avoiding harm to the marine habitat.
  • Each case of fish is fully traceable by utilizing Trace Register and QR codes.
  • Fish is DNA tested.

Small community-based fishermen in day boats catch all of Handy’s fish in the pristine waters off the Yucatan peninsula using hand-line fishing techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation and date back to the Mayans.

“Handy’s main objective is to feature different species of fish throughout the year promoting sustainability practices and offering fish that are caught in an ocean-friendly way,” stated Joe Klaus of Handy. “We are encouraging restaurants nationally to help promote sustainable fisheries.”

Handy also offers fully traceable and DNA tested snapper and mahi-mahi

Restaurants that serve Handy’s delicious artisanal fish are able to give diners access to specific information on those fish through the Trace Register program. Diners scan a QR code placed on the restaurant menu or table tent and are taken directly to a site where they can follow the path the fish took from catch to plate and find out further details about the fish. Handy’s artisanal fish are DNA tested providing restaurant owners assurance that the fish they serve is the same species they purchased.

Handy is one of the first seafood companies to trace its sustainable artisanal fish and making the results available to restaurants and their customers.
