Larsen Seafood Focuses on Sustainability

  (DENMARK, 11/10/2010)

As sustainability gets more and more important for consumers, Larsen Danish Seafood offers different solutions to fulfil this demand.

Today one third of the food bought by consumers is thrown away; therefore food waste is becoming a major sustainability issue. Larsen´s single portion concept keeps food fresh and reduces food waste - this packaging has been awarded by DuPont.

Larsen is known for the unique enzymatic maturation and recipe of their products and can definitely fulfill the high expectations of every matjes herring-gourmet

Larsen’s packaging features good portion-control and optimal storage due to long shelf life. Very helpful in maintaining food quality for longer, both in store and at home.

Larsen Danish Seafood is an environmentally conscious company. Larsen has received the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) Label that rewards sustainable fishing. The company uses recyclable materials and is focussing on the environmental impact of CO2 and at the same time producing healthy and “all nature” products. Furthermore, Larsen created microwaveable portion packs for reduced food waste.

Larsen is also a leading supplier of canned seafood. The company has access to many species that are caught according to the MSC-standards for sustainable fishing.

Larsen Danish Seafood has over 250 employees at the factories in Denmark and Germany. The factory in Løgstør, Denmark produces canned products with mackerel, cod liver and pate. Larsen specialises in mackerel products and delivers a top quality, which has made the company one of the leading producers in Europe. The factory also manufactures the new convenient products from Larsen in innovative, award-winning packaging.

At the factory in Harrislee, Germany Larsen produces fully preserved products based on mackerel, herring, salmon, tilapia and other species and, warm smoked products made according to old, traditional smoking methods; kippers (smoked herring), smoked mackerel, smoked trout and sprats. At the factory in Bremerhaven, Germany Larsen produces chilled products.

About Danish Seafood

It all started in Frederikshavn in Northern Jutland back in 1899. The fisherman I.A. Larsen, who after selling his catch every day for years, started to
Larsen manufactures its own brands, middle segment and private brands
develop his business. The development went from fishery to export and in the 1960s to include production of processed fish. Today, Larsen Danish Seafood employs over 250 employees in the three factories in Denmark, Germany and Iceland.

Larsen Seafood processes fish not only from Nordic waters, such as mackerel, herring and salmon but also exotic species like tuna, tilapia and sea bass – exporting to most European countries and more than 40 countries around the globe.

The value chain, from being involved in catching the fish, with great understanding and focus on quality and the process, into processing, is still today one of Larsen’s most valued competences and one the company still takes great pride in.
