Young's Seafood ceases operations in Grantown
(UNITED KINGDOM, 1/29/2016)
British producer and distributor of frozen, fresh, and chilled seafood, Young's Seafood Ltd., confirmed the closure of its smoked salmon plant in Grantown on Spey, Scotland.
The company had announced in July that the plant was to close after the loss of a GBP 100 million (USD 143.1 million) contract to supply salmon to supermarket chain Sainsbury's.
Meanwhile, it had sought to buy the site that it leased from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
Both parties failed to reach an agreement for the bid to acquire the premises and therefore, Young's will finally leave the site.
An HIE spokesperson explained, “We offered Young’s an extension on their present lease, which would have enabled the business to retain occupancy while seeking new contracts.
“We were also clear that we would be happy to consider selling again in future, once they had returned the premises to productive use,” he added, BBC News reported.
Young's Seafood supplies approximately 40 per cent of all the fish eaten in the United Kingdom every year.
