Morrisons expands its processing facilities in Grimsby

  (UNITED KINGDOM, 1/21/2015)

By recently acquiring Kerry Foods site in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, Morrisons will be able to double its fish processing capacity.

In its existing plant, Morrisons currently produces 250 tonnes of fish a week, but with the new facility, it will be able to expedite and streamline the processing. The new site will include packing, chilling and filleting divisions.

The workspace also extends from 35,000sqft (3,251 m2) to more than 120,000sqft (11,148 m2).

Mark Harrison, Group Manufacturing Director, said, “Not only will we be able to supply a wider product range but we’ll also be increasing the number of skilled jobs available in the local area."

In fact, the expansion involves the addition of approximately 200 new jobs.

"The new space will mean we can manage the entire process of preparing fish ourselves and because that’s efficient we’ll be able to offer even better value to our customers,” he added.

Harrison also pointed out that the project of enlarging seafood manufacturing operations has been carried out due to the success of its first site and the growing demand for fresh fish from its customers.

When in 2012 Kerry Foods, which produced frozen ready meals, could not find a viable immediate solution for its site, it was assisted by Morrisons, through a consultation that extended for three months.

In 2014, Morrisons also opened a facility at the Humber Seafood Institute to service the growing online supermarkets and convenience services.

Fisheries Minister George Eustice visited Morrisons in March 2014, and highlighted that Grimsby has "a vital role to play in the fish supply chain," Grimsby Telegraph reported.

For Martin Vicker, parliamentary representative for Cleethorpes, the expansion of Morrisons is a sign that the economy is improving, both locally and nationally.

"I sincerely hope the number of jobs is just the starting figure and they look to expand in the future," he added.
