Young's Seafood plant enters 90-day consultation period
(UNITED KINGDOM, 9/29/2011)
Young's Seafood is entering a 90-day consultation period with the 230 workers at its shellfish processing site in Cromer. All those workers could lose their jobs.
Possible options for the Cromer site will be explored, including closure in 2012 and moving some operations to other sites to Grimsby or plants in Scotland, where the majority of Young's UK employees work.
The company said it would discuss the options for the Cromer site with staff, union representatives, the local community and customers before settling on a definitive plan.
Pete Ward, chief operating officer of Young's Seafood Limited, took the time to praise local staff while simultaneously noting that a new plan was necessary to make sure Young's remains a sustainable business, BBC reports.
"We have worked hard in Cromer, over a considerable amount of time to try to drive sales, reduce costs and ensure this is a viable site but unfortunately the challenges are increasing," he said. "These proposals are about us having to adapt to the new reality in our external environment to ensure that Young's has a long term successful future."
He pointed to struggles with inflation, industry over capacity, new capacity coming into shellfish processing, aggressive competition, pressure on margins from promotions and customers and consumers looking for ever-better value as reasons for the company’s decision to conduct a review, Norwich Evening News reports.
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb explained that he was “very depressed” after hearing the news and would get together with Ward this week. He has also offered to meet with the staff that might lose their jobs.
Founded in 1980, the Cromer processing plant prepares prawns, crab, lobster and other shellfish for the UK retailers' own-label, chilled product varieties.
Young's Seafood Limited gives work to about 3,200 people across 13 UK locations.
The review of the shellfish manufacturing operations comes after the merger of Young's, Findus UK and Ireland and the Seafood Company as one business.
