Sustainable, wild caught, Mexican shrimp.

The Finest Sustainable Wild Caught Shrimp in the Market

  (UNITED STATES, 3/10/2016)

Del Pacifico Seafoods, a social and environmentally responsible wholesaler, supplies retailers and food service companies the finest quality seafood, with the lowest impact to the environment in the industry.  Del Pacifico has its own state-of-the-art processing facility, ensuring quality from capture to delivery.

Del Pacifico Seafoods offers sustainable, wild caught, Mexican shrimp. Del Pacifico's shrimp is the only shrimp fishery certified by Fair Trade in the world. The fishery encompasses eight small-scale cooperatives of artisanal shrimp producers in Sinaloa, Mexico currently participating in a long-term fishery improvement project (FIP).

Fishing is conducted in 25-foot-long vessels equipped with outboard motors and an 80-foot modified cast net operated by fishermen conducting daylight trips.

In order to earn certification the producers had to meet a series of criteria designed to promote worker empowerment, local economic development, social responsibility and environmental stewardship. The fishery began the audit process for certification in September 2015 and received certification in January 2016.  The certification is also the first of its kind in Mexico.

The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) helped the Mexican shrimp fishery to achieve Fair Trade certification. The SFP has been working with the fishery in an improvement project since 2009, collaborating with Del Pacifico.

By fishing from small boats called Pangas, rather than trawlers Del Pacifico Seafoods is reducing the effect of destructive fishing practices, burning less fuel and lowering bycatch. Pangas fish with an artisanal technique that uses wind and tide to drift a highly selective net called Suripera. This technique has the lowest bycatch and fuel consumption per pound globally.

The artisanal Sinaloa shrimp fishery generates annual landings of 2 million pounds with a value of USD 14 million.

Having a limited range and storage, Pangas must off-load within hours of a catch. Del Pacifico Seafoods' shrimp specialists pick up the catch every day and take it to their own state-of-the-art processing facility. Del Pacifico Seafoods follows the highest international standards, all seafood products are painstakingly processed, frozen and shipped within a few hours from capture, ensuring the finest sustainable shrimp in the market.

By purchasing seafood that is both socially ethical and responsibly harvested, consumers can have a direct, positive impact on fishing communities in Sinaloa.
