Strong Spanish showing at Brussels fair

The opening of the European Seafood Exposition this Tuesday in Brussels, the world’s leading European fair of the fishing sector is marked by the attendance of 1,600 companies from 144 countries.
In the XVII edition of this event, set to end Thursday, several Latin American countries are participating - Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay – and Spain will boast the strongest showing as far as space (a pavilion of 3,000 square metres) and number of companies (115 firms).
The autonomous communities of Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country will have their own exhibition area.
The Spanish exhibition area will be
that of the Fund for the Regulation and Market Organisation of Fish and Marine Products (FROM), an autonomous entity of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM).
The head of the Ministry, Elena Espinosa, will attend the inauguration of the exhibition.
The European Seafood Exposition will gather together companies from all the sectors related to fishing: fresh products, processing, distribution and technology.
Besides Espinosa, the councillor of Fisheries of Andalusia, Clara Aguilera will also attend; as will the councillor of the Canary Islands, Pilar Merino, and the councillor of Cantabria, Jesus Oria, among other Spanish authorities,

This year, Andalusia boasts 500 sqm of exhibition space, that will welcome 19 companies; Galicia will showcase 39 companies; the Canary Islands will have a space of 256 sqm of exhibition space and nine companies dedicated to fish product commercialisation; and the Basque Government will be represented by eight firms.
Some of the Spanish companies present will be Pescanova, Galfrio, Pescamar and Iberconsa, among others.
According to organisers’ breakdowns, 35 per cent of the participating companies are related to the sector of fish and shellfish import/exports; 17 per cent are local distributors of the same; 8 per cent are service companies ; 6 per cent are aquaculture firms and 5 per cent, food services, La Voz de Galicia reports.
