INIDEP to Transfer Technology for Yellowtail Amberjack Production to a Private Company
(ARGENTINA, 10/2/2025)
Agreement with Acua Grow Acuícola S.A. Allows for the First Large-Scale Yellowtail Amberjack Fattening Project in the Country; the Species (Seriola lalandi) Is Highly Valued in International Markets
MAR DEL PLATA — The National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) and the company Acua Grow Acuícola S.A. sealed a momentous agreement for the development of aquaculture in Argentina. This agreement, finalized last Monday, September 29, establishes the transfer of technology and technical advice by INIDEP for the design, construction, and commissioning of a commercial pilot plant intended for the fattening of Yellowtail Amberjack (Seriola lalandi).

This initiative marks a milestone as the first experience of marine fish farming on this scale in the country, reinforcing Argentina's potential to diversify its fisheries production matrix, traditionally focused on capture fishing.
Provision of Juveniles and Technical Advice
The agreement, signed by the director of INIDEP, Mag. Gonzalo Eduardo Bacigalupo, and the president of the company, commits the Institute to taking a central role in the provision of Yellowtail Amberjack juveniles. This will be achieved through the execution of two intensive larval rearing cycles, initially planned for the reproductive seasons of 2027 and 2028. In addition to delivering the specimens, INIDEP will offer a program of technical assistance, training, and qualification for the firm's staff.

The Yellowtail Amberjack, known internationally as Yellowtail Amberjack, is a highly prized species, especially in Asian and haute cuisine markets, for its use in preparing sushi and sashimi. Its high demand and rapid growth make it an ideal candidate for intensive farming, ensuring a product of high economic value.
Years of Research in Captivity
This agreement is the culmination of years of work by the INIDEP Mariculture Program, which has researched Yellowtail Amberjack cultivation since 2016. The Institute's scientists achieved the species' reproduction in captivity without the use of hormones, successful larval rearing, and successful fattening, with farmed specimens reaching 3 kg in weight.

The transfer of this scientific and technological knowledge to a private productive project aligns with Argentina's strategy to promote sustainable aquaculture, which reduces pressure on wild stocks and encourages innovation in the fisheries value chain.
