Computer-driven trout farming

  (NORWAY, 8/19/2024)

With machine learning models developed specifically for trout, the Aquabyte system can estimate biomass, count lice and monitor fish welfare with high precision in trout farming.

There are many similarities between trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and salmon, but the differences are large enough that traditional systems for salmon farming cannot be used for trout production. We have therefore developed our own machine learning models for trout. Based on these unique models, the Aquabyte system takes over one million images from the cage daily which are analyzed to provide precise data and information.

CALCULATION OF BIOMASS

The system delivers weight and biomass data via the Aquabyte User Portal. The data are presented as averages per cage. With daily and accurate updates, the graphs provide good insight into the trout's growth trend.

When slaughter reports are made in Aquabyte Brukerportal, the system provides information on estimated weight distribution (bucket size) for the trout at cage level.

DAILY UPDATES ON LICE NUMBERS

As with our salmon product, lice are counted with high precision on the trout every day, and the daily updates give a very good insight into lice development. The system also makes forecasts for expected lice development for each cage one and two weeks into the future. The forecasts are given with high accuracy, and are an important aid when deciding whether and when de-lice treatment must be carried out. Good insight into the real lice situation and expected development in the future means that costly de-lice removal can be postponed or avoided.

MONITORING OF WELFARE

Aquabyte monitors a total of twelve external welfare parameters for trout, including eye damage, genital maturation, deformities and wounds. Welfare data is updated daily so that any challenges can be detected early, trends are followed up and decisions are made based on real status instead of assumptions.

SYNERGY EFFECTS

Our three main products LUS, VEKT and WISE Welfare can be used separately, but the synergy effects of combining all three are great. The combined insight from the three products gives a better overall picture of the status in the cages, and can be decisive for you to be able to make the best decisions both for fish welfare and profitability.

"PENFLIX" - LIVE VIDEO DIRECT FROM THE CAGE

As the only system for monitoring weight, welfare and lice, the Aquabyte SYSTEM gives you live video from the camera in the cage. You get closer and can observe the fish up close, see if it is still eating and use the depth gauge in the camera to verify how deep the fish is.
