Falkland celebrates Patagonian Toothfish Month
(FALKLAND ISLANDS, 9/17/2024)
The Falkland Islands fishing company, Consolidated Fisheries Ltd, celebrates the benefits of Patagonian toothfish during the month of September, inviting the community and the media to participate in evaluating the properties that this product from the depths of the sea has for cooking and consumption.
This year in particular has a special flavour as it also marks thirty years of Consolidated Fisheries Ltd, established in consortium with fishing companies to become a wholly Falkland company, owned by Falkland Islanders and with the aim of sustaining the resource, which is fished at depths of up to 1,800 metres.
To mark the anniversary, CFL is offering, in addition to recipes for tasting the exquisite Patagonian Toothfish, a series of cash prizes, T-shirts and other items for residents of the Islands.
CFL Hunter, the longliner built entirely with Falkland capital
CFL was launched in 1994 and is an internationally certified MSC fishery for the capture of Patagonian Toothfish. In February 2017 CFL saw the launch of its new longliner, CFL Hunter in Marin Spain. She replaced CFL Gambler which had been the flagship since March 2004.
The construction of CFL Hunter was a milestone in the history of the Falklands as she was the first vessel built specifically with Falkland capital. Her operational qualities, both in terms of fishing capacity and in mitigating environmental impacts, have made her one of the most ecologically sound fishing vessels operating in Falkland waters.

It should be added that CFL regularly makes donations to projects that benefit the community. Among the latest efforts is the restoration of the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse to its historic glory as the guiding light that guided ships and sailors in their approach to Stanley, together with Beauchne Fishing Company and the Falkland Government, FIG. Work is expected to continue this summer and be completed by 2026.
“Our primary focus is investing in structural projects that will benefit the community in the long term, but we are also very pleased with the donations and sponsorships across a range of community-based activities we undertake,”, said CFL General Manager Janet Robertson.
CFL also provides commercial diving services to the entire Falklands marine industry in partnership with SMGG, Shallow Marine Survey Group. It is understood that CFL filled a gap in the market by acquiring Martech's Diving Equipment, and began trading in that area just over a year ago.
SMGG undertakes basic diving duties and is partnered with ARB Punta Arenas when more specialist subsea engineering work is required [email protected]
