Marín - The Organization of Fresh Fishing Producers (Opromar) organizes a day of special relevance for the sector on May 29 in the Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The event, which will begin at 09:00, will bring together leading experts and representatives of the fishery to address the importance of the work certificate in fishing and the current status of ILO Convention No. 188 after its ratification by Spain .

 

The day will be inaugurated by Isabel Artime García, Secretary General of Fisheries, and Juan Carlos Martín Fragueiro, Managing Director of Opromar, and their interventions will mark the beginning of a series of high-level sessions, designed to promote fair and safe working conditions in the fishing sector.

 

Obtaining a fishing work certificate is a vital issue to ensure that sea workers operate in safe and dignified conditions. This certificate guarantees that fishermen are protected under international labor standards, thus promoting the social and economic sustainability of the sector.

 

The Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (Convention No. 188) of the International Labor Organization (ILO), sets standards to improve working conditions in the fishing sector. This agreement, adopted in 2007, addresses fundamental aspects such as:

 

 

 

Working Conditions: Establishes requirements for safety and health at work, as well as living conditions on board fishing vessels. Includes measures to prevent accidents and occupational diseases.

 

Contracts and Payments: Ensures that fishing workers have clear contracts and receive fair and timely payments. Promotes transparency in labor relations.

 

Social Protection: Promotes the inclusion of fishing workers in social security systems, guaranteeing access to medical care and benefits in case of accidents, illnesses or unemployment.

 

Inspection and Compliance: Requires countries to adopt measures to inspect ships and ensure compliance with labor standards. This includes training inspectors and implementing sanctions in case of non-compliance.

 

Ratification of Convention No. 188 is essential to harmonize labor regulations in the fishing sector globally, ensuring that all maritime workers are treated with fairness and dignity.

 

Despite its importance, many countries have not yet ratified this convention, leaving many fishermen without adequate protection.

 

In fact, the implementation of Convention No. 188 not only improves the working and living conditions of fishermen, but also benefits the fishing sector as a whole. Ensuring a safe and fair work environment helps attract and retain qualified workers, promotes the sustainability of the fishery resource and improves the industry's international reputation.

 

During the conference, the challenges and opportunities related to the ratification and implementation of this agreement will be discussed, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices between the different actors in the sector.

 

The event will conclude with a tasting of fishing products, highlighting the importance of the sector, not only as a source of employment, but also as a provider of healthy and sustainable foods.
