Alcampo Promotes Sustainable Fishing

  (SPAIN, 12/14/2023)

Incorporates the first own brand octopus with MSC certification

Alcampo has incorporated into its assortment the first own-brand octopus with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for sustainable fishing that guarantees the health of the population of captured species, the positive impact of the fishery on the marine ecosystem and the effectiveness of its management.

This octopus, which is sold in cooked legs under the gourmet brand Auchan Collection in 200 gram containers, is caught in the waters of the Cantabrian Sea, specifically in the Bay of Biscay (in FAO 27), by the artisanal octopus fishery in Asturias. western and is subsequently treated by the company Congelados y Frescos del Mar, located in the Madrid town of Getafe and in its preparation it only uses salt and bay leaf in cooking.

The Auchan Collection octopus has a diet based on shellfish and mollusks from the area, and is raised in a rocky habitat, which gives it a different flavor, closer to rock fish. Its color is darker precisely due to its diet and its texture is meatier due to its more developed muscles, partly due to the water temperature, which is colder in FAO 27 than in FAO 34, where octopuses usually come from.

Alcampo now features 72 MSC-Certified Products and Eight ASC-Certified Products

In addition to the octopus, Alcampo has incorporated three other products with sustainable fishing certification: smoked salmon loin with the ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) seal, smoked Alaskan salmon with the MSC seal and sliced MSC smoked tuna, all of them Auchan Collection.

“We conceive a responsible offer and work hand in hand with our suppliers and expert organizations to make our vision a reality: Eat well and live better while taking care of the planet,” explains Alcampo's Own Brand product manager, Laura Gutiérrez.

With these new products, Alcampo increases its own brand certified in sustainable fishing and aquaculture (MSC and ASC), offering twenty products (anchovies, anchovies, tuna or bonito, among others). In global terms, the company has 72 products with the MSC seal and eight products with the ASC seal.

The incorporation of certified fishing products is one of the principles that supports Alcampo's Sustainable Fishing Policy. In this sense, in 2023 the company was awarded by MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) with the Mares Para Siempre Award in the Distribution Brand Canned Foods category, an award that recognizes Alcampo's effort and commitment to the sustainability of the oceans.
