International Pacific salmon research expedition started

An international expedition to study Pacific salmon began on February 5 with the participation of scientists from Russia, Canada and the United States. The expedition will be attended by specialists from the subordinate organization of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography, as well as scientists from Canada and the United States.

Specialists are surveying areas of water south of the Aleutian Islands, where various species of salmon feed, to gather information on their biology, ecology, abundance and distribution.

The winter period is critical for the survival of juvenile salmon in their first year in the ocean. It is very important to understand what factors are limiting for salmon, which will significantly improve the quality of the salmon forecast.

Scientists are preparing for a large-scale international survey to study salmon during their ocean winter.

The global program is dedicated to comprehensive research on Pacific salmon at all stages of the life cycle, from juvenile migration to return to spawning grounds.

For these purposes, the entire range of work is involved: coastal surveys of spawning grounds with the help of observers, unmanned aerial vehicles, marine accounting work during their departure from coastal waters for winter feeding.

This is the third international trip under the auspices of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC).

According to scientists, the practice of exchanging knowledge, methods and experiences in the study of salmon among highly qualified specialists turned out to be useful and in demand. The research vessel (RV) TINRO will be one of four vessels surveying the entire winter feeding ground for salmon in the northeastern Pacific Ocean.

The first international study aboard the Russian research vessel R/V Professor Kaganovsky with scientists from Russia, the US, Canada, Japan and the Republic of Korea took place in 2019. At that time, complex marine studies were carried out of Pacific salmon in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
