Sea Farm Innovations have developed a new system to make sealice treatment safer, faster and better.

Cermaq plans to use new non-chemical delousing salmon system

  (CHILE, 4/5/2019)

Aquaculture company  Cermaq has decided to use a new tool in Chile from July to combat sea lice in salmon, a system that does not imply the use of chemicals.

The delousing tool, developed by Sea Farm Innovations (SFI), is a mechanical system that is based on flushing with clean sea water with ambient temperature to remove the sea lice and simultaneously collects it so it can be filtered from the water, safeguarding animal protection.

This patented innovative system is the first on the market, where treatment is in full control. There is no harmfull chemical or heat treatment. SFI System is inspired by the salmons natrual behaviour, which minimizes any unwanted side effectes from the treatment.

Cermaq explains that the treatment itself only lasts for approximately 0.2 seconds per fish, and is effective against both mobile and adult sea lice.

“We know that the sea lice situation in Chile is challenging, and we need to expand our toolbox to remain control,” explained Harald Takle, R&D Manager Farming Technology in Cermaq Group.

“We are cooperating closely with SFI, combining their entrepreneurial approach and competence with our experience to adapt the technology to ensure an optimal effect against sea lice in Chile. For safe implementation, we will use Cermaq’s fish welfare scoring system and highly dedicated personnel. If successful here, we will share this knowledge with the industry in Chile and our operations in Canada and Norway,” the executive points out.

Tackle explains that to achieve a safe implmentation, they are going to use the fish welfare scoring system Cermaq has and highly trained staff.

The executive says that if they are successful in the company, they are thinking of sharing the knowledge with the industry in Chile and their operations in Canada and Norway.

According to the firm, the delousing system can treat all fish sizes, has a high treatment capacity, is easy to operate and can be installed on multiple boat types.

Javier Herrera, Sea Water Director for Cermaq Chile, ensures he is anxious to start using this new system.

“We are looking forward to deploy the new tool. This system will enable us to delouse our fish gently and hopefully with high treatment efficiency,” claims the executive.

“We are going to use the SFI system on our sea sites in both region 10 and in region 11,” Herrera highlights.

For his part, Eyðbjørn Hansen, Managing Director at Sea Farm Innovations, welcomed the partnership with Cermaq, emphasising the main focus from the beginning has been fish welfare.
