Abba Seafood is the market leading fish and seafood company in Scandinavia

From the Sea to Table

  (SWEDEN, 7/1/2010)

Abba Seafood’s history has been entwined with the sea for over 170 years and ever since its foundation in 1838, the company has been developing
Abba Seafood KRAV certified herring
their expertise in processing fish and shellfish from the sea.

Abba Seafood produced the first Swedish fish product to carry the KRAV label - their own KRAV herring. Following that Abba has added a further two KRAV herring products and a KRAV marked Kalles caviar to their assortment.

Extremely stringent environmental requirements are placed on both fishing boats and tackle in order for the product to receive the KRAV marking. The tackle must be designed so as not to threaten the sustainability of the stock nor cause long-lasting damage to the environment. For example, stitching in the net should be large enough to allow small fish to pass through. Herring is fished from sustainable stocks that have been approved for long-term fishing. This means that the fishing does not exceed the biological reproductive capacity.

Abba Seafood products for the foodservice industry

The company is also aiming to increase its offer of MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) labelled products. At present Abba Seafood MSC labeled range includes herring, mackerel and tuna (albacore). Last year, Abba Seafood was awarded with the Green Fish Award for having the largest increase in Sweden of MSC and KRAV labelled seafood products.

Abba Seafood has secure traceability from fishing vessel to factory
Abba Seafood carefully monitors where the fish are caught and their purchases are based on information from ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) with support from the Swedish Fishing Industry Association (Fiskbranschens Riksförbund) and its recommendations. In order to guarantee that the fish are caught within current quotas, Abba Seafood has secure traceability from fishing vessel to factory via the preparation companies with a written guarantee that the fish have been legally caught within current quotas.

The company’s entire production plant is certified by EFSIS (European Food Safety Inspection Service), Kosher, HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point), and complies with ISO 14001 (International Organization for Standardization).

About Abba Seafood

Abba Seafood is the market leading fish and seafood company in Scandinavia, exporting a range of high quality products to some 30 countries around the world.

Abba Seafood's recipes are typically Scandinavian
Today – with 350 employees and an annual turnover of about SEK 1.000 million – Abba Seafood is the market leader in value-added seafood throughout Scandinavia.

Strong Swedish food traditions of marinating and preserving fish and shellfish from the cold, fresh waters of the north-east Atlantic are behind Abba Seafood’s range of products. The recipes are typically Scandinavian, being Sweden its biggest market, where 80 percent of the company’s turnover is generated.

Abba Seafood is constantly working to refresh and develop its products and brands, which include the well-known names Abba, Kalles and Hållö. At the same time Abba Seafood actively works towards achieving sustainable fishing. “What’s good for the sea is good for us” is the company’s motto.

 The Orkla Group

Abba Seafood is a part of Orkla ASA (Public, OSL:ORK). The Norwegian Orkla Group operates in the branded consumer goods, aluminium solutions, materials, renewable energy and financial investment sectors. The Group has a turnover of NOK 70.000 million and 35.000 employees in more than 40 countries.
