Thai Union Selects Zunibal to Upgrade Electronic Monitoring Across Supplier Longliners in the Indian Ocean

  (SPAIN, 10/19/2026)

The agreement integrates artificial intelligence and cloud data management to streamline catch traceability, audit fishing operations, and verify compliance with international sustainability standards across the supplier fleet.

Derio (Bizkaia) - Global seafood leader Thai Union has entered into a strategic agreement with Spanish marine technology company Zunibal to upgrade and modernise electronic monitoring (EM) systems aboard tuna longline vessels operated by its suppliers in the Indian Ocean. The deployment combines secure cloud infrastructure, specialised video review, and proprietary artificial intelligence tools designed to accelerate footage auditing and support evidence-based fishery management.

The initiative directly supports the SeaChange® global sustainability strategy spearheaded by the Bangkok-headquartered group. Since establishing its Tuna Sustainability Targets in 2015, Thai Union has achieved notable operational benchmarks: more than 99.9% of its branded tuna is sourced from responsible operations, 95% is covered by at-sea monitoring mechanisms, and 100% can be traced back to the catching vessel. Data captured through the upgraded EM platform will facilitate monitoring against regional and international fisheries governance frameworks.

Zunibal will deliver an end-to-end service model encompassing onboard hardware installation, ongoing technical support, cloud data hosting, AI-assisted video review, and comprehensive compliance reporting. Developed in line with EM operational guidelines established by Thai Union and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the monitoring program also adheres to technical standards defined by the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF). This integrated framework ensures supplier vessels can substantiate adherence to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard to maintain certification.

On-the-ground operational execution will be supported by Zunibal Asia, based in Kaohsiung (Taiwan), which will provide hands-on crew training and technical support in local native languages, acting as a close interface for vessel owners and operators. Project governance is coordinated by Key Traceability, a UK-based marine sustainability consultancy and partner to Thai Union, ensuring monitoring metrics feed directly into active Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs).

Tony Lazazzara, Global Fish Procurement Director at Thai Union Group, stated that the selection reflects the technology firm's ability to translate artificial intelligence into tangible operational gains at sea, expediting review workflows while safeguarding tuna stocks (Thunnini) and fulfilling rigorous consumer requirements.

Ángel Martínez, Commercial Director at Zunibal, noted that uniting cloud platforms, expert review, and more than a decade of proprietary AI development reduces the turnaround time and associated costs of catch verification, providing verifiable evidence to satisfy MSC and TNC benchmarks. Tom Evans, Director of Key Traceability, affirmed that bridging proven software with direct maritime experience remains essential to meeting long-term fishery improvement objectives.

Founded in 1977, Thai Union employs over 44,000 people worldwide and posted revenues exceeding THB 133,000 million (US$ 3.96 billion) in 2025. Headquartered in Derio (Spain), Zunibal brings over 30 years of engineering expertise in marine acoustics, satellite telemetry, and oceanic AI, and includes Australian hydroacoustic specialist Echoview within its corporate structure.
