IN BRIEF - TRIBUNE: 'French fishing in danger'

Monday, May 27, 2024

Members of the Merchant Marine, Fishing and Pleasure, and Navigation and Oceanology sections of the Marine Academy - Gérard d'Aboville, Francis Baudu, Jean-François Bernicot, Serge Beslier, Alain Biseau, Marc Chevallier, Bernard Datcharry, Patrick Geistdorfer, Olivier de Kersauson, Alain Laurec, Bernard Mazuel, Frédéric Moncany, Marc Pajot and Jean-Emmanuel Sauvée - wanted to express their concern about the crisis in the sector.

The current crises, covid, and Ukraine, have shown the importance of ensuring the security of the nation's supplies and our food sovereignty. The role of maritime transport is obvious but that of maritime fisheries is less so.

Media campaigns aimed at demonizing so-called “industrial” fishing in general and trawling in particular place the debate on a much more emotional than rational terrain.

It seems important to us to remember that a large part (60%) of French fishing landings comes from trawling, an activity practiced almost exclusively by vessels over 12 meters long which some describe as " industrial" . That the trade balance in seafood products is very largely in deficit (4 billion euros), and that aiming to eliminate large trawler boats would only aggravate this deficit (unless consumption decreases drastically, which does not seem to neither possible nor desirable).[Continues...]

IN BRIEF - Europêche, asks Von der Leyen to guarantee neutrality until the new Commission is established

Thursday, June 20, 2024

Fishermen call for the vacancy already left by Virginijus Sinkevicius to be addressed and for any potential interim commissioner to refrain from interim mandates
Madrid - The European fishing sector, represented by Europêche, of which the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA) is a part, has formally requested the acting president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, to address priority is given to the imminent vacancy left by Virginijus Sinkevicius, Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries in the previous Community Executive, following his announcement of taking up a parliamentary seat.
Left, David Voces, general director of Europêche and right. Javier Garat, pte Europêche.
The sector requests this in a letter addressed to the president in which, in addition, it values ??her decision to appoint an exclusive Commissioner for Fisheries for the next term, and emphasizes the need to achieve a true balance between the conservation of biodiversity, a fleet competitive fishing and food security. According to the sector, this balance has not existed during the current legislature and it is necessary to make decisions based on greater knowledge of the fishing reality and scientific data.
Likewise, the sector calls on Von der Leyen to pay greater attention to primary food production and food sovereignty, advocating for these issues to be raised to the level of the Vice Presidency within the agenda and structure of the new Commission.

IN BRIEF - Hawaii Longline Fishery sees revenue decline

Thursday, June 20, 2024

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A report prepared for the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and summarized for local media, highlights a nearly 8% decline in revenue for the Hawai‘i longline fishery due to a drop in average fish prices at the first point of landing in Honolulu Harbor.

The 2023 Stock Assessment and Fishery Evaluation Report, which monitors fish catch and revenue, was presented to scientists and advisors of the Council’s 152nd Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) meeting from June 11-13, 2024, for advice on shaping the future of fisheries management in the Western Pacific Region.

The report indicates that while the Hawaii longline fishery landed slightly more fish in 2023, greater yields did not lead to higher revenue. Industry representatives confirmed better catch rates towards the end of 2023, but overall it was a very tough year for the fleet. It was further noted that the volume and price of subsidized foreign imports, coupled with all-time high operational costs, are causing severe economic impacts on the fleet, which is the State’s largest food producer.

The Hawaii longline fleet consists of 150 U.S.-flagged vessels operating out of Honolulu Harbor. The SSC discussed this information to provide scientific advice on the management of this fishery.

IN BRIEF - Los Lagos: Chile's second largest exporter region of non-traditional products

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

In 2023, ProChile worked hand in hand with 5,936 companies, generating almost half a million jobs. Of these companies, more than 2 thousand are exporters, contributing 79% of the total exported by Chile during that year. This is equivalent to a figure of US$33,029 million dollars.
In this context, the Los Lagos Region stands out as the second largest exporter region of non-traditional products. But there's more: it was also ranked second among those that have a science-based innovation ecosystem. Quite an achievement. An example of this dynamism is that as of June 2024, more than 12 activities linked to export promotion have already been carried out.
Ricardo Arriagada, Regional Director ProChile Los Lagos
They range from the traditional seafood sectors - with participation in international fairs - to actions in the tourism sector, including Enexpro Global Solutions with aquaculture industry suppliers, the World Summit Awards WSA and the Dairy Sector Congress, among others.
Exports from the Los Lagos Region also had a positive first quarter of 2024. The increase of 1.3%, compared to the same period of the previous year, was mainly driven by the aquaculture sector, with the United States, Japan and Brazil being its main destinations.

Other Media | Industrias Pesqueras: Artificial Intelligence configures a new map for fishing

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the reality of economic sectors. Fishing is not far behind. For a few years now, the emergence of this computer branch has been a turning point in favor of improving knowledge of the oceans and their resources and, with this, has allowed advances in fisheries management, both for the fleet and for the regulatory bodies of their activity. Satlink, Zunibal and Marine Instruments are pioneering companies in the use of AI in fishing activity. For these companies, the application of this combination of algorithms in their solutions has led to an optimization of electronic observation, better discrimination of species and, in general, a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems, which translates into a better support for the fishing sector.
