Salmon farmer Bakkafrost Scotland has provided Kirn Primary School, Dunoon, with a donation towards outdoor facilities through its latest round of Community Fund awards.

Thanks to the donation from Bakkafrost Scotland, Kirn Primary School has been able to purchase four wooden picnic benches that have been installed in the school garden, which is a focal point within the local community.

An aerial drone photo taken on May 25, 2024 shows a fishery-solar power integration project in Changxin Township of Helan County, Yinchuan City, northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Helan County has been popularizing fishery-solar power integration projects as a more efficient and sustainable way to develop its fishery industry. Arrays of photovoltaic modules are set up on fishponds to avail of the generous sunlight while providing shield for the fish therein. The Fisheries Development Institute, IFOP, was created on May 26, 1964, by the Production Development Corporation, CORFO, and the National Fisheries Society, through an international technical assistance project in fisheries matters between the Government of Chile, the United Nations Development Program, UNDP, and the United Nations Agricultural Organization, FAO.

Gonzalo Pereira, Director Ejecutivo de IFOP, destacó “en el contexto del aniversario 60 de nuestra institución durante el presente año hemos programado una serie de actividades, seminarios, cursos, la publicación de un libro al final de este año, y dado que nuestro aniversario fue el 26 de mayo, es que estamos lanzando un nuevo video corporativo,  en el cual se hace referencia a los 60 años de historia de nuestro instituto, que muestra como hemos crecido,  y además un lienzo conmemorativo en la fachada de nuestra oficina principal  en Valparaíso, donde aparecen los dos  buques científicos administrados por IFOP,  Abate Molina y Dra. Barbieri.

Estos dos eventos se suman a otras actividades que estaremos realizando durante todo el año".

Yoshiharu Kamino, manager of the Surimi Group, Sales Division 2 at Tokai Denpun (Shizuoka City, President Hiroshi Hayama), gave a speech at an exhibition held by the company in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo on the 24th, where he presented his outlook for future surimi production in major countries.

He predicted that Russia, a new producer of Alaska pollock surimi, will see its current production of about 40,000 tons grow two to three times to 100,000 tons in 2027, three years from now, and that India, the world's fourth largest producer of surimi, will increase its current production of 110,000 tons to 125,000 tons, a 14% increase.

New conditions and safeguards for the use of certain exemptions to the margin of tolerance rules to ensure accurate fish quotas and healthy fisheries have been adopted by the European Commission.

The margin of tolerance is the maximum allowed difference between catch estimations by captains of fishing vessels and the actual weight of the fish caught. The standard margin of tolerance is set at 10% per species.

The event takes significant steps to reflect the industry’s dynamic nature and address the needs of both exhibitors and visitors.

Having reviewed all exhibitor and visitor feedback, it was found that the overall majority’s preference is to host the show every two years (2025, 2027 etc),alternating each year with the Scottish Skipper Expo. It was also found that the majority of visitors and industry leaders would prefer the show to be held later in the year and as such, the new dates for the 2025 Irish Skipper Expo are Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd March.

Salmon farmers and feed producers faced with the prospect of having to stop buying Northeast Atlantic blue whiting – a key marine ingredient for salmon feed - have urged the Norwegian government to talk with them about agreeing its quota for the fish with other countries.

The so-called Coastal States that fish the Northeast Atlantic region agree on how many tonnes of whiting should be fished, but not on what percentage of that total each state can have.

With export turnover reaching more than 168 million USD, up 14% compared to the same period in 2023. In the same period last year, in April 2024, pangasius exports increased again after 2 consecutive months of decline.
