IN RIEF - Ministers seek to fight organized crime in global fishery

Saturday, March 25, 2023

Organized crime in the fishery industry that endangers stocks, exploits labor and robs states of billions of dollars must be fought. This is according to officials meeting in Copenhagen on Thursday, March 23.

Around 600 million people worldwide depend on the sector for their livelihoods.

Government ministers and delegates attended a conference by the Blue Justice Initiative. The conference was backed by 60 coastal states including Brazil, South Africa, Norway and Indonesia. The goal was to jointly eliminate transnational crime in global fishery.

Many developing nations lack the basic tracking systems needed to understand the latitude of the problems, the Norwegian fisheries ministry said.

The transnational nature of organized crime makes law enforcement even harder. It can be difficult to prove that a crime took place within the maritime borders of a particular country.

IN BRIEF - A very interesting market for fresh Norwegian salmon

Friday, December 01, 2023

A very interesting market for fresh Norwegian salmon This is the conclusion of the new salmon report that the Seafood Council has commissioned in Vietnam.

This is the conclusion of the new salmon report that the Seafood Council has had carried out in Vietnam.

Over several years, Norway has exported salmon by-products to the Vietnamese market. But it is especially the fresh salmon that is interesting, because it is sold at a much higher price.

The consumption of fresh salmon is increasing: Today, the Vietnamese eat 33 percent more fresh salmon than they did five years ago.

In Vietnam, many other things are also growing: the population (which has surpassed 100 million), purchasing power, seafood consumption (which has increased from 20-34 kilos in six years), the total seafood imports and the import of Norwegian salmon.

The Vietnamese eat around 6,500 tonnes of fresh salmon a year. It may not be that much when you take the population into account. Still, it's a good deal when you know that 10 years ago almost no one did it. In addition, most of the salmon originates from Norway.[...]

Friday, December 01, 2023

Ichiro Miyashita, Japan’s minister of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, recently suggested having Japanese prisoners shuck scallops to alleviate the lack of manual labor in the country’s seafood-processing sector – but he abandoned the plan after discovering that the U.S. and Canada don’t allow imported products made with prison labor in their supply chains.
