The Kingfish Company has become the first fish farmer in Europe to successfully complete a pilot of the new “Raised Without Antibiotics” Standard.
The company produces yellowtail kingfish at its RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) in Zeeland, in the Netherlands, through its subsidiary Kingfish Zeeland.
The standards, developed by the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) as part of its BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices) Vanguard programme and released last year
Weeks after the second ultimatum from the European Commission, which threatens to take Spain and other MS to court for not stopping the accidental capture of cetaceans, the Government responds: Spain is complying, the data reveals that the level of interaction of the fleet Spanish fishing industry in the Cantabrian-Northwest is “low” and the use of “pingers” – acoustic devices – is effective.

Because time is short, the Spanish and community fleets continue to document themselves to try to defend themselves against the new offensive by the European Commission. They did not quite believe that in order to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, the European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius, head of Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, and his general director of Maritime Affairs, Charlina Vitcheva, intend to veto all bottom fishing in 87 areas of Spain, Portugal , France and Ireland.

By turning off a special gene with the CRISPR method, researchers at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway have created the world’s first salmon without gametes. The purpose has been to develop a farmed salmon that cannot mate with wild salmon if it escapes.
Now the researchers have followed such salmon throughout their entire lives (a so-called production cycle) to compare growth, signs of welfare and omega3 content with normal farmed salmon.

Interactions between farm-raised salmon and wild salmonids are complex and difficult to quantify. However, through Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) Mowi supports meaningful and well-designed monitoring surveys which provide evidence on the health and status of wild salmonid populations.
Stephen MacIntyre, Head of Environment, told Mowi Scotland’s ‘Scoop’ newsletter:
“The ability to determine where our impacts may occur within the environment has always been a key priority for Mowi
Experts in underwater imaging technology are trialling the use of 3D digital models to map out and monitor complex marine environments and habitats close to Scottish salmon farms.ç
Led by Oban-based Tritonia Scientific – with support from the Lyell Centre at Heriot-Watt University, salmon producer Mowi, and the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) – the company is testing the effectiveness of using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to create digital twins of the seabed.
Iceland is heading for a mackerel crisis due to the state of fishing in its territorial waters, according to Norwegian fishing newspaper Fiskeribladet.

Rising temperatures in Mediterranean and Atlantic waters decrease catches, forcing more miles to be traveled to fill the nets and leading to higher fuel use
The warming of the sea could raise even more, if possible, the cost of diesel by Spanish fleets such as the tuna fishing, among other economic consequences such as the reduction in catches, which Mediterranean fishermen have already noticed this week.
“The idea of an allotment for growing mussels came up after study at the local university, in which researchers were able to grow mussels on lines to an eatable size in just one year,” explains Bernt Kjær Sørensen, chairman of Kerteminde Maritime Haver, on the east coast of Funen.
The idea gained further impetus when Sørensen discovered that a community near Aarhus had recently set up its own – successful – small-scale mussel farm.
